What's it like living in Bydgoszcz?
Bydgoszcz is a very easy place to develop your career in ELT. If you are new to the profession, there are many experienced teachers willing to help you and the training and development available to you on a daily basis is of a very high standard. Similarly, for more experienced teachers, there are greater opportunities for personal development, such as pre-diploma groups, additional courses, becoming actively involved in Cambridge exams, and even running your own workshops, or taking on a senior role.

In Poland, the people are friendly and helpful and almost everything you would want to buy is available. Although the pay doesn't seem much when translated into sterling, by Polish standards you can live comfortably and can afford to eat/drink out most nights as well as have weekends away. Poland is quite a cultured place (opera concerts etc. are cheap and accessible) and although the language is hard, you will soon master the basics ("piwo/bilet, prosze"). If you are serious about ELT as a career, Bydgoszcz offers plenty of opportunities for career advancement and further training.

What about the city?
Bydgoszcz (pronounced, "bidgoshch") is a city of approximately 400,000 inhabitants and contains all the bars, restaurants, cinemas and concerts you would expect from a city of this size. It is surrounded by a huge woody park called "Myslecinek", which is only a 10 minute tram ride from the centre. This is an excellent place for walks, or if you simply want to get out of town and relax. Bydgoszcz is located about 40 minutes by train from the historic town of Torun and provides easy access to Gdansk (2 1/2 hours), Poznan (2 hours) and Warsaw (4 hours) as well as overnight trains to Krakow and the mountains in the south of Poland. Bydgoszcz is one of the cleanest Polish cities and is situated around a picturesque market square and on the Brda river. It also has a host of modern amenities - there are 2 multi-screen cinemas showing films in their original language (one of them located just behind the school in a mammoth 150-shop shopping centre with restaurants and a gym), as well as bowling alleys and lots of supermarkets (even Tesco's).

And the School?
IH Bydgoszcz has 13 teachers and approx. 700 students in and out of school and some in-company. Ages range from 5 to adult, divided into 4 age streams. Mostly it is General English, but there are special classes such as some ESP and Cambridge exam preparation (FCE, CAE, CPE) (We are also the local UCLES centre for these exams).

The school has its own building, a recently renovated Kamienica block. It boasts its own computer room, conference room, two ample teachers rooms and a club, with bar. The school itself was opened in 1992, and has grown to be one of the largest private language schools in Poland. There is a popular social programme for staff and students including a conversation club, pub quiz nights, children's club, school parties and 5-a-side football games.

The school offers daily teacher support and weekly teacher development sessions from experienced diploma qualified staff. There are regular teacher observations and an open door management policy.

The school is also an IHCYL training centre; this course is run intensively in September as a bonus for returning teachers and is available part-time over the academic year for others.
What the current teachers wrote about Bydgoszcz

There are various reasons why IH Bydgoszcz is so popular. The most obvious reason why people come to IH Bydgoszcz is it is a school which offers a wide range of readily available resources and excellent facilities, including a well-stocked club and modern computer suite. There is a well-balanced training/development programme which includes weekly workshops and regular training days – extremely important for newly qualified / inexperienced teachers. There is an excellent support system in place which includes book meetings with senior/experienced teachers who are always available to help in your hour of need. Polish students are very focussed and motivated, but most important of all, they are great fun to teach which makes the job worthwhile. Bydgoszcz itself is a vibrant city which offers a variety of shops, bars and restaurants, and the best cake shop in the country. It also features a multiplex cinema, showing current movies in the original language. The salary affords a comfortable lifestyle, and all accommodation costs are paid by the school.

Why become an
IH Bydgoszcz teacher?

IH Bydgoszcz has a lot to offer, especially for newly qualified teachers, in that, although it is a small school it has an excellent teacher training programme with regular workshops and seminars. Teachers get very good support in a friendly staff room where there are senior and experienced teachers as well as newly qualified ones. Also, there is good support from the admin staff. The school has good resources for its size and the classrooms are bright and comfortable. There’s also a club and a well-stocked computer room. The young learners are a lot nicer than most places in the world! The cost of living in Bydgoszcz is quite low, it has a lot of good shops, a couple of excellent gyms, lively cafes and bars, and there’s also a big cinema that shows English language movies. Also, you must visit the cakeshops which are excellent! Bydgoszcz is in a central location with easy access to historic towns such as Gdansk and Warsaw, and it has its own airport with cheap flights to Stansted.

Why become an
IH Bydgoszcz teacher?

Bydgoszcz is a pleasant town to live in and its cake shops are a dream come true! The school itself is in a recently renovated old building that is well-resourced with great facilities for teachers and students including a computer room and club. The in-house training is excellent, with weekly workshops and many opportunities for teacher development and assistance all along the way. This is particularly important for newly qualified / less experienced teachers. The terms and conditions of work are also favourable – free accommodation including bills and return air fare from Stansted.

Quotes from teachers

Bydgoszcz really comes to life in the summer, and so although the winter months can seem long and dark, it’s worth the wait once the fountains are switched back on and the parks are filled with flowers. Sometimes the reception you get as a native English speaker can be described as frosty, at best, but in the vast majority of cases people are very friendly. My students have been great and I’ve really enjoyed teaching them. The Polish sense of humour is brilliant! I’ve also really enjoyed making friends with the other staff - I’ve had so much fun just preparing lessons in the same staffroom as them.

Bydgoszcz is a city that might not impress you at first, but it grows on you as you get to know it. Coming from Costa Rica I found the winter particularly cold even though Polish people told me it was a mild one. The city is experiencing lots of change at the moment as they are building lots of new things, and the pubs and clubs are great. It has lots of very charming places like the park in front of the school and the local churches where you can see some great paintings and sculptures.

As a first year teacher, IH Bydgoszcz has been an excellent place to start out (so much so I’m coming back!). The training/ workshops are useful and practical. The school’s well equipped for resources etc. and the other staff are all unfailingly friendly and helpful. The cakes are pretty good here too ~ Viva Bydgoszcz!

Don’t forget to bring Marmite (now available in handy plastic squeezy bottles.) Also ear plugs as some of the flats are near busy roads. Ask for “Pasek” when you buy tram tickets - these are slightly cheaper than buying individual tickets ( it’s a strip of 10 tickets for 19zl 80gr). Don’t leave stuff in the fridge overnight at work as sometimes it disappears!

2006 - 2007

The school is small, but well-equipped with a pleasant atmosphere. Excellent workshops and good quality staff support. The town is ok if you like small towns . However, it is in a good central location.

One of the best things about teaching at IH Bydgoszcz is the supportive atmosphere, both from fellow teachers and support staff. It is a great place to start your teaching career in terms of professional development through workshops, observations and book groups. As for Bydgoszcz itself, it has a good selection of bars, restaurants and the best cake shop in Poland. It has a lovely park on the outskirts and the central square really comes alive at night.

Bydgoszcz is in the heart of Poland and it has easy access to many other wonderful towns. The school's great location means that there are plenty of things to do on the doorstep.

I've been a rock and roll star, learnt how to teach and become a qualified younger learner trainer. Not bad all in all. The school has gone through a lot of changes - all for the better - and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here. A great place to be!

Ray Walker

2001 - 2006

I came to Bydgoszcz in 2002, and was impressed by the way the whole organisation was run. Over my time here, the school has sponsored me to take the IHCYL and Delta, and I took on the Dos role in February 2005. Since then I have tried to keep the school running on the same lines as when I arrived - a friendly, supportive place, committed to giving the best service we can.

Neil Preston

2002 -2008

I arrived in Bydgoszcz in November 2006 having just completed my CELTA at IH London. The resources available at the school are second to none as is the support from both the endlessly patient Dos and Polish staff alike.

I have taught a wide range of levels, from young learners through to advanced students. The potential for development and training opportunities are fantastic so much that I will be returning for a second year!

Erica Bayley

2005 - 2006

For everything that guide books say, Bydgoszcz is a lively city if you are ready to open the door and look. The arrival of university status will ensure growth of the social life.

The school itself is situated very close to the old town and is well resourced with both materials and experience. The support and advice that you receive is of an extremely high quality. The door is always open and you never feel that your question is stupid.

2004 -2006

When I first came to Bydgoszcz, IH was housed in the Eltra building, a typical piece of communist architecture. Then we moved to a beautiful nineteenth century building ideally suited to a language school and this is where we are. Bydgoszcz is an excellent place to start your TEFL teaching career, because the students are open and friendly, the training is of a high standard, and Bydgoszcz has plenty to offer the teacher.

It's not a tourist destination so if you want to visiti Poland before its cheap prices and nice beer create the hordes everywhere, try a year here. The city has everything a modern western city has and it's certainly on the up. This part of Poland also offers true seasons, so if you want snow one month and sweaty armpits the month after this is your place. The school is a good one and is ideal to get solid experience for anyone straight off their CELTA. I might be back next year!

2005 - 2006

IH Bydgoszcz is located close to the city centre with good public transport nearby. The school is well equipped and friendly; Bydgoszcz itself is located near forests and lakes and has an award-winning park, so there are lots of opportunities to enjoy nature.

With lots of pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafés, there's always something to do here. I've been here for 3 years now and find the teaching staff very helpful. The school is now in a renovated pre-war building with a computer suite and airy classrooms.

A very attractive town which a lot of the places featured in good guidebooks (eg Gdansk, Sopot, Poznan, Gniezno, Znin Torun, Biskupin) are easily accessible on an inexpensive day trip. The forest is glorious and the city centre with its rivers and parks is very pretty.

The school offers suberb support to inexperienced teachers - in addition to the regular programme of workshops the DOS and TTC are always available to help with lesson plans etc. and the colleague group is very supportive, The Polish diet can be a little monotonous (kebab, pork, cabbage) but the cakes and ice cream and pierogi (the Polish pasta) compensate!

2005 - 2006

I cam to IH Bydgoszcz in November 2005. It is the fourth ELT position in my career; I've enjoyed teaching Polish students - I find them hard-working and open. Teacher development at school made my work more challenging. I've also been taking the IH young learners course and look forward to teaching children. Bydgoszcz is a middle-size Polish city offering just about everything to enjoy yourself.

Sarka Cox

2005 - 2006

I started teaching at IH Bydgoszcz in January 2006. It was my 6th year in ELT. I got an opportunity to teach young learners and that inspired me to take the young learners course in the near future. Weekly seminars, observations and training days provided valuable teacher development. However, I wouldn't recommend IH Bydgoscz to teachers with bad allergies or asthma due to coal burning during the winter months.

Chris Cox

2005 - 2006

Cam back for a second year at IH Bydgoszcz, did the IHCYL and now going back to the UK to do a PGCE. I have enjoyed my time here, and have found the support and guidance especially useful.

Łączy w sobie logikę i konsekwencję z pasją i spontanicznością. Pracowało nad nią wielu nauczycieli, lingwistów i metodyków. Pierwsze z nich przeprowadzono właśnie w IH w 1962 roku. Nadal kształcimy tysiące nauczycieli, którzy są cenionymi w świecie profesjonalistami.
